It’s not that they confused me or that I found them too complex, they just felt a bit ‘meh’. The Tuscany expansion added a lot of layers, but they didn’t really seem to lift the gameplay experience enough to justify their existence.
The game already felt a little fiddly to set up and play, with the tiny cards and the slippery glass beads to track grapes and wine. Not to mention we tried a 4-player game and it took what felt like way too long time for a relatively mid-weight board game. By our 6th game I’d started to find the game play a little repetitive. I suspect the signs of my eventual disappointment were there from the start. However, after a recent couple of games, including the Tuscany expansion, we were both left feeling a little underwhelmed. Viticulture was one of those games that me and my wife played over and over again the first weekend I got it, and we really enjoyed it. In fact I even picked up the Tuscany expansion. I’d previously reviewed this game and lavished it with praise. *Note* I’ve listed the games according to BGG () ranking (1 being the highest rated). Anyhow, now that’s out of the way - let’s get on with the list.
There’s a tendency to put certain games on a pedestal and for some of these well loved game, I just didn’t see the magic. My board gaming ‘palette’ is also maturing and gaining sophistication as a play more games, so some games I was initially impressed by may have lost their sheen over time. Primarily my reasons for getting rid of a game would be that it was too complex or long to set up or didn’t play well at 2 as I play most my games at 2 player with my wife (although after recently joining a board gaming club, this is starting to shift, and actually means I have even less motivation to own more games). But for my collection I felt they weren’t quite suitable enough. To be clear, this doesn’t make them bad games, or even mean I wouldn’t recommend them. I wanted to share my experience culling great games from my collection by sharing 40 very good games that left my collection and why I let them go.
That can lead to some very painful and difficult decisions (in board gaming terms at least).
